Arris SB8200 and Motorola MB8600 are two of the newest and most promising cable modems to have introduced the new DOCSIS 3.1 Technology (Motorola from Zoom is the most recent). Each of them offers up to 32 QAM download channels and 8 upload channels for the DOCSIS 3.0 standard (backward compatible) or two OFDM linked channels with the DOCSIS 3.1 standard. This way, you should be able to take advantage of the highest available speeds that your power can provide, which is currently only 1 Gbps. DOCSIS 3.1 aims to change this by paving the way for at least 10 Gbps for downstream and at least 1 Gbps for upstream. However, it may take three to four years for this to become the norm.
Speed and Performance
Why did Arris offer download speeds of up to 5 Gbps while Zoom (the real manufacturer of Motorola MB8600) offered 3.8 Gbps? Well, in the case of Arris, the real maximum possible speed should not exceed 2 Gbps (the 5 Gbps are just marketing based on the DOCSIS 3.1 standard which supports the download speed of 5+ Gigabit, as corrected at the bottom of the box), while Motorola aims for future simultaneous use (link aggregation). Although the SB8200 and MB8600 have very ambitious goals, these are future-proof features. Let’s find out which of the two cable modems is currently the best with the available technology.
Design
The Arris SB8200 follows the traditional design of the last three generations of Arris cable modems from the SURFboard range, ensuring brand recognition. However, when buying a new device, some level of design novelty is a necessity. Arris has decided to stick with its tried-and-true formula. The SB8200 has a robust white plastic cover with a matte surface, preventing fingerprints. Its compact size (5.24 x 5.24 x 1.65 inches) makes it easy to position anywhere in the room without taking up too much space. However, it weighs 2.1 pounds, which, combined with its small form factor, means it can be easily tipped over.
In contrast, the Motorola MB8600 has an elliptical-cylindrical shape with rounded corners, covered in a gray matte surface (no fingerprints). The top band and integrated lower support are glossy black. The MB8600 is significantly larger than the palm-sized Arris SB8200, measuring 7.0 x 7.2 x 2.2 inches. Despite its size, it weighs 18.4 ounces, providing stability. The numerous cuts on the right, left, and top ensure good air circulation, keeping the device cool even under heavy use.
Features and Functionality
Both modems offer advanced features like DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which supports higher speeds and improved performance. However, the Arris SB8200 includes the option to mount it on the wall, although this might obstruct ventilation and is not recommended. The SB8200 also features four front LED indicators that show the power status and connection type (green for DOCSIS 3.0 channels and blue for DOCSIS 3.1 channels).
